Freedom of the press: 'deleterious climate' in democracies

The 2018 edition of World Reporters Without Borders World Ranking  worrying of a re-Winning the hostility of political power towards journalists.

Citing Stalin, Donald Trump did not hesitate to qualify the media as 'enemies of the people' a few months after his election. For Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the US President's claimed hostility recalls that threats towards journalists are no longer 'the prerogative of authoritarian countries only'.

 On the occasion of the publication, Wednesday, April 25, of the 2018 edition of his ranking of press freedom the NGO reveals that 'more and more democratically elected heads of state no longer see the press as a foundation of democracy, but as an adversary . RSF also denounces a ' deleterious climate that touches even the countries  on high  of ranking .' Norway and North Korea conserving respectively the first and last place,

If the United States recede two places in the 45th position behind Romania or Burkina Faso,Europe is not sheltered by threats proffered by political leaders towards the media, notably since the emergence of populist parties'  using anti-media rhetoric. 'Political leaders who fuel journalism's detestation, bear a  heavy deal of responsibility,' says Christophe Deloire, RSF Secretary General.

 The organization targets the leaders of the Central European countries, following the image of Serbia, which loses ten place (position 76) or Hungary (position 73), where Prime Minister Viktor Orban accuses independent media that he discredits his country, close to international opinion.

France wins six places (position 33), but, according to the NGO, it is a partially mechanical 'comeback' after the exceptional fall of some of its European neighbors. '
